What is Small Business Building?

Small Business building is an online learning resource developed by the University of western Sydney. Small Business is an Australian Government funded initiative designed to educate and assist small business owners in starting, running and growing their businesses.

Who is this website suitable for?

This website is designed to suit a wide range of people including existing business owners and people wanting to start their own business, people who work for small to medium size businesses (especially managers) and anyone who wants to learn more about operating a business. You don’t require any existing knowledge about business to benefit from this website.

What are the hardware and software requirements for using the website?

Most basic computers will be suitable for this website. You will need Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher or an equivalent web browser. Some content on this website also requires Flash Player version 8 or above, JavaScript to be enabled in your browser and Adobe Reader.

How is this website structured?

The Small Business Building website offers a range of information via the main menu providing guidance and support on areas of small business including, starting-up, improving an existing business, resolving disputes, buying a business and exiting a business. Each of these sections contain fact sheets with simple explanations and links to further information. Once you have entered one of these sections you will also have access to a range of information and tools including; fact sheets, simple user friendly checklists and an online business planning tool. Simply scroll and click on the various resources to access and use them. When using the checklists and planning tools please note you need to register and login to save your information. You can access the registration and login function at the top right hand corner of the site.

Free online course

In the “Learn” section of the website you will see our free online course which is a Certificate III in Micro-Business Operations.  This course is completed by working through a series of seven modules and if you wish you can contact one of the suggested RTO’s (Refgistered Training Organisations) shown to pursue certification for your learning. There is also detailed course info provided in this section.

The website is structured into seven core learning units: Opportunities, Proposals, Finance, Resources, Regulations, Marketing and Websites. Each unit contains three to four chapters, depending upon the scope of the topic discussed.

In each chapter, you are provided with a range of learning resources including videos, fact sheets, case studies and practical based activities. Together, this information will help you to build your own business plan using the business plan builder tool.

There are also a number of learner support tools including announcements, review notes and a discussion forum.

How do I access the learning resources on the website?

Free online course

How do I save and track my progress?

If you are a registered user of the site, you progress will be automatically tracked. You will also be able to record your responses to the business plan questions.

Registration Process

Small Business Building is a website developed by the University of western Sydney and funded by the Australian Government. The website provides open access without the need for registration however if you do register you will have access and be able to save your information to the to the online checklist and business planning tools. To register click on the “Signup” button on the top right hand corner of the site. When you first register a conformation email will be sent to your email address to allow you to confirm your registration. Once registered click on the login button to be able to save your information. All of your data and information is confidential and will not be accessed at any time. What do I do if I have forgotten my username or password?

Your username is your registered email address and you will need it to retrieve your password. Click on the forgot password link in the signup/login area and enter your registered email address to start the reset password process. Once you submit your request an email with further instructions will be sent to you.

How do I change my password or profile detail?

Login to Business Building Blocks and click on the My Profile link (located just above the search box). The form will allow you to update your details and change your password. Click ‘save changes’ to update your profile.

Who should I contact if I have any problems with the site?

How do I get certification of my learning?

If you would like to gain formal certification of your learning and be presented with a certificate III in micro Business Operations, you can contact one of the RTO providers shown on the RTO list . These providers have partnered with Small Business Building so will be able to offer you teaching support to assist you in either working through the content and submitting required assessment tasks for evaluation or they can alternatively provide a straight assessment of your learning, just contact one of the rot’s for a discussion on which option may be best for you.
